Sean Marshall

Sean Marshall was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2003. He moved up in the minor leagues and made the Major Leagues roster starting with the 2006. He started 24 games that rookie season but he struggled some. After 19 starts he went to the bullpen. He later returned for another 5 starts and finished with a 6-9 record with a 5.59 ERA.

Sean is a tall, lanky left hander standing 6' 7" and weighs in at 220. His best pitch is a big sweeping curve. He has a modest fast ball. If his curve ball is on he is very effective. If not, he can't make a living on his fast ball.

Sean Marshall started the 2007 season on the DL with but was called up on May 22. He was promoted to be the 5th pitcher in the rotation. He has done alright. Probably would look better if the offense had been a little more productive when he pitched.

He had a problem with wildness in 2008. To his advantage he is a pretty good left hander and the Cubs need one. He has been trying to land the starting pitcher position but has bounced back and forth between that and the bull pen. He did start 7 games but mostly played the role of situational spots.

He started out 2009 as the fifth starter but lost that spot the end of May after giving up 8 runs (7 earned) in just 4 innings against the Dodgers. Plus, now the Cubs called up Randy Wells and he took over the final spot when Zambrano came back from DL. That doesn't mean Sean won't start again, it just may be a little while. The schedule dictates a lot and he is the only left hander in the bull pen with Neal Cotts optioned back to AAA Iowa.

He has done everything the club has asked and you don't hear any complaints. I think he will continue to play a role out of the bull pen as a left handed specialist and will get the call to start when the opportunity arises.

Sean Marshall kept up his role in the bullpen and had one of his best years. He didn't start any games but he did appear in 80 games and posted an excellent .265 ERA. He mainly came into the game in the eighth inning and recorded 22 holds.
