Chicago Cubs Players Bullpen for 2012

Chicago Cubs players bullpen for 2012.

Update 5/5/2012

The bullpen is going to go through changes during 2012. It is one of the weaker parts for the club. Carlos Marmol pitched himself out of a job by not throwing strikes. And with that his closer role has been taken away. No specific player has been named and it may be closer by committee. But I would suspect that James Russell and Rafael Dolis to be used the most.

Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood are back. Sean Marshall is gone via trade to the Cincinnati Reds. John Grabow was not resigned and I believe he is now with the Dodgers. Looks like Jeff Samadzija will be part of the bullpen or he could be a starting pitcher.

The cast of characters then gets a little grey as the roster has some possibilities but no known winners at this point.

Hoping for a better year from Carlos Marmol. Kerry Wood is more than a pitcher as he is a leader in the club house. The bullpen needs to get a lot better than last year.

Carlos Marmol

Carlos Marmol

Position: Closer
Bats: Right, Throws: Right
Height: 6' 2", Weight: 215 lb.
Born: October 14, 1982 in Bonao, Monsenor Nouel, D.R.
Signed by the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1999.
Debut: June 4, 2006
Team: Cubs 2006-present

Carlos Marmol was demoted from the closer role by Dale Sveum on May 4, 2012 after his blown save against the Reds the day before. He had problems with his control and walking batters to the point there needed to be a change. He is still with the club but was is next for him is unsure.

Carlos Marmol took over the closer role in 2009 and it proved to be the smart move. He had 38 saves and only 5 blown saves. He had 138 strike outs in just 77.2 innings. That is 1.78 per inning. But in all fairness his 52 walks and 8 hit batters is high. His ERA was an excellent 2.55.

Carlos has one of the best sliders in the game to go along with his mid nineties fastball. His slider is almost unhittable. But, from time to time his ability to control that breaking ball has led to too many walks.
Carlos came up through the Cubs players farm system and made his first appearance June 4, 2008.

Debut: April 12, 1998
Teams Cubs/Indians/Yankee's/Cubs 1998-2011
The Cubs were successful in resigning Kerry Wood and I am sure everyone is happy about it. He would like to finish his carreer with the Cubs and he should have a couple of good years left. I agree with what is said about him is that he a player the Cubs want and need on their team.

He is not the starting pitcher he once was but now a set up out of the bull pen. With all his arm troubles etc he doesn't have the ability anymore to go more than an inning or two. But he reportedly still has he fast ball and wicked slider. If he can only get it over the plate. He is still a fan favorite and the Cubs are his team.

James Russell is a left hander in the bullpen and needed for situational spots along with short and long middle relief. He was selected in the 2007 amateur draft.

Russell is age 25 . He was a surprise to make the team but he had a spotless spring. He has done what has been asked of him and looks like he will stick around. He has given up too many home runs, but he throws strikes and doesn't walk many.
