Starlin Castro hot new prospect

Starlin Castro is the new hot prospect for the 2010 Chicago Cubs. We knew this in spring training but the word was he was not ready for the big time just yet. He needed more experience, more seasoning. He just turned 20 on March 24^th of this year.

He is from the Dominican Republic and didn't play his first year of baseball in the United States until 2008.

The scouting reports say he is future star. He was hitting around .370. He had some power. He has speed and better than average range at shortstop. He has a strong arm and said to be a smooth fielder.

So calling him up to the majors is a no brainier. Right?

The consensus in spring training was to keep him at the AAA level until he was ready. That was why he was not on the opening day roster. He had a great spring. Plus the Cubs have 3 middle infielders. Ryan Theriot is the shortstop and he is playing great and is proving his is a good choice for the lead off spot. Fontenot and Baker are platooning at second base. The Cubs don't need a shortstop or another middle infielder. Chad Tracy is the back up for both third base and first base.

All that being said, Jim Henry and Lou Piniella decided that waiting was not necessary and they sent an invitation for Castro and optioned Chad Tracy to AAA.

Starlin Castro is a tremendous athlete and super star he may become. If now is the right time to pull the trigger and this is the correct move we will have to wait and see.

Castro's debut on 5/7/2010 against Cinncinatii was tremendous with six RBI with a home run and triple. His Wrigley Field debut against Florida on 5/10/2010 was anything but, committing 3 errors and a few mental ones.
