Not much history on Sam Fuld. He has had only a couple of brief trips to the big club. He has been playing organized ball since eighth grade. He is a Stanford University graduate where he set a number of school records. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs twice. The first time in 2003 but he elected to finish college first. His father a college professor and his mother a New Hampshire State Senator probably have some influence there.
The Cubs drafted him again in 2004. He has been moving up the minor league ranks and finally called up in September 2007. To start 2008 he was in competition with Felix Pie and didn't win that battle. And as you can see either did Felix Pie. He ran into some problems in 2008 because of a thumb injury that hampered his advancement.
Fuld played winter ball and had another good spring but again started the season with AAA. I know hind sight is bliss but we spent all that money on Bradley and got rid of DeRosa.
Fuld finally got called up June 30, 2009 when Aaron Miles went on the disabled list. Maybe he will get to show his stuff and stick around for awhile. Its seems to me he has showed more than the big salary guys so far. He looked great at lead off, he can run and steal bases, he plays a go for broke outfield and just plain gives it his all.
He made the highlight reel and web gem with his catch in 2007 in the ivy at Wrigley Field right center and followed with a one hop throw to first base to complete a double play. And this year he has made a number of fine plays and also had an assist with a perfect throw from left field to home.
Sam Fuld didn't make the team out of spring training in 2010 and spent the entire year in AAA Iowa. He was called up near the end of August and appeared in 19 games. Didn't have a real good show at the plate in his limited experience this year.
.Just for reference, Sam Fuld is a type 1 diabetic and has been since age 10. Just like our should be hall of famer Ron Santo it doesn't get in his way.
