Ryan Theriot

The only major league organization Ryan Theriot has played for is the Chicago Cubs. He was drafted in the 3rd round by the Cubs and moved up the ranks to AAA Iowa. He was mainly a shortstop but was converted to 2nd base when he was brought up by the Cubs at the end of 2005 when the rosters were extended.

He spent 2006 splitting his time between AAA Iowa and the Cubs. He was a very versatile infielder and played every infield position except first base. After showing his talents and hitting .353 his trips back to Iowa were quickly coming to an end.

He was moved back to shortstop when he replaced Cesar Izturis who was traded away in 2007. Obviously the Cubs felt they had found their shortstop of the future.

A case can be made that he is one of the more consistent players, both offensively and defensively on the team. He has been moved all over the batting order from lead off to number 2 to the bottom of the order. And he has performed all each spot.

He has settled pretty much at the number 2 spot in the order. At the number 2 spot he has excellent bat control and can go to right field when he needs to. He is a good bunter and doesn’t strike out very often. In the off season he built himself up and Lou Pinella suggested he try and drive the ball more. Where it might make you think this would take away from some of his other talents he has produced more home runs in though July 2009 than his total career to date. At first I thought it hurt his batting average but it looks now like he has adapted. Most of the team is in a hitting slump but Theriot has is not one of them.

Ryan Theriot has proved he is a winner. He was a member of the Louisiana State baseball team that went on to win the College World Series in 2000. He and teammate Mike Fontenot were the double play combination. Both were named to the All Tournament team.
