Jed Hoyer General Manager Chicago Cubs

On October 26, 2011, the Chicago Cubs announced that Jed Hoyer had joined the organization as their general manager. He will take over the duties that belonged to Jim Hendry. Jed Hoyer had previously been the general manager for the San Diego Padres from 2009 until joining the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are will owe the San Diego Padres a player to be named later.

In October 2009 he was hired as the San Diego Padres general manager. Perhaps his best known deal as GM of the Padres was when he sent 1B Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox in exchange for RHP Casey Kelly, OF Reymond Fuentes, utility man Eric Patterson and 1B Anthony Rizzo.

Hoyer also worked with Theo Epstein while with the Boston Red Sox. Jed was an assistant general manager while with Boston working under Epstein.

Born December 7, 1973 he shares the same birth month and year with Theo Epstein. Hoyer seems like he is cut from the same mold as Epstein with the new era of General Managers in the way they make deals and evaluate players.

Hoyer has interviewed with a number of clubs including the Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hoyer graduated from the Holderness School of New Hampshire in 1992, then went on to Wesleyan University, where he was a star pitcher who still holds Wesleyan's career saves record. Hoyer worked in the admissions office and then the alumni/development office, and was also a baseball coach at the University after graduating, then moved on to Kenyon College before joining the Red Sox in 2002. He married Merrill Muckerman in June 2010 in St. Louis.

There have been a number of early deals orchestrated by Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstein. The decided not to retain Mike Quade as the Cubs manager. The hired Dale Sveum to manage the Cubs. They were also able to move Carlos Zambrano to the Marlins which took a huge set a baggage with him.
