The Cubs announced that Carlos Zambrano is done pitching for the year. The reason given that there will not be enough time for him to get ready following is 30 day time on the disqualified list. No big surprise here. He may also be done with the team
The only player called up so far is 28 year old first baseman Bryan LaHair. LaHair batted .331 with 38 homers and 109 RBI in 129 games for the AAA Iowa Cubs. He is the only minor league player the Cubs have added since the rosters expanded Sept. 1.
Kerry Wood and his wife, Sarah, will be holding the sixth annual Kerry Wood Strike Zone Celebrity Bowling fundraiser Sept.18 at 10pin Bowling Lounge, 330 N. State Street.

The Cubs are in Washington DC playing the Nationals. And they have lost 3 straight 1 runs games. Each game it seems the Cubs find a new way to lose. Tonight it was a squeeze play that put the Nats up 1 run in the seventh and the Cubs couldn't find a way to get that run back. The Cubs had 2 two run homers. One from Carlos Pena (18th) and the other by Aramis Ramirez (14). Ramirez has the bat going. It seems just yesterday he had only a couple of round trippers.
But starting pitching continues to be a problem. Randy Wells only lasted 4 innings, giving up 10 hits and 4 runs.

"Well Cubs fans. What an enjoyable 2 games against the Giants at Wrigley Field. If you watched it at Wrigley or on WGN it was great.
Yesterday the Cubs pulled it out after blowing it. Today the Cubs tied it in the bottom of the ninth on a home run by Ramirez. The game went into the 13th. San Francisco went up by 1 on Pablo Sandoval's home run. The Cubs, with 2 out tie the score when Darwin Barney drives in Jeff Baker. Jeff Baker had doubled to deep center. Starlin Castro was intentionally walked to get to the pitcher John Grabow. Mike Quade was down to his last pitcher in the bullpen but had to pinch hit. He sent Geovanny Soto up to drive in Baker. It came down to a 3-2 count and Soto hit it into the bleachers.
This was so sweet. It was to be a big pitching match up between Carlos Zambrano and Matt Cain. Zambrano was not at his best. He was not hitting the strike zone and somewhere he hurt himself. Lower back spasms is what they say. He left in the second.
The big story I think of the last two days is the Cubs pitching. Wednesday it was Ryan Dempster going head to head with Tim Lincecum. Dempster was lights out through 9.
Today it was the bullpen that shut down the Giants from the second inning to the top of the 13th. Look at the pitching box score. 3 hits and 1 run is all they gave up over 12 innings. In fact there weren't any hits from the third to the 13th. Marcos Mateo saved the bullpen for this weekend against the Sox. He pitched out of the jam in the second and went 5 innings striking out 6 with no walks. Jeff Samardzija, Sean Marshall, James Russell, Carlos Marmol and John Grabow earned their pay today."

Cubs beat Giants 2-1.
Dempster pitches his best game of year. Out duels Tim Lincecum but doesn't get the win. Ryan Dempster pitched into the ninth with a 1-0 lead and gave up a double to Pat Burrell. Mike Quade decided to go with Carlos Marmol to close it up but the plan didn't work. He gave up game tying single before getting the side out with a double play.
Tony Campana leading off the ninth got an infield hit to short. The kid can fly, wasn't even close. He needed this as he wasn't able t make the diving catches in the top of the ninth. A bunt by Reed Johnson, an infield out by F Soto put Campana on third. Aramis Ramirez, who was resting for the game pitch hit with a soft line drive to left that fell in for the game winner. Tony Campana just trotted home.

Cubs lose to Giants 13-7 and 6-3.
The Cubs lost both ends of a doubleheader against the S. F. Giants. The first game was a make up from a previous rainout.
The Cubs pitching just doesn't add up. With Doug Davis and Rodrigo López going against Ryan Vogelsong and Barry Zito it didn't seem as the Cubs had much of a chance. Only hope was that the Giants offense was as weak as written about. But the Giants brought their hitting shoes and hit highs for the year in both runs and hits in the first game. The second game wasn't all that much better. The Cubs go down 13-7 and 6-3 in the night game
Bright spot was Carlo Pena hit his 17th leading the team in the first game. Aramis Ramirez hit his 9th in the night cap and Lou Montanez connected for his first major league round tripper.
Just found out that Darwin Barney has returned from the Disabled List. Doug Davis has been released. He was 1-7 with a 6.50 ERA in 9 games.

Cubs win make up game over Rockies 7-3
The Cubs hit 4 homeruns, 2 by Aramis Ramirez and 2 from Carlos Pena. Matt Garza pitches 7 innings to earn his 4th win.
Pena now has 16 home runs for the year to lead the Cubs. That includes 7 home runs in the last 11 games. Just blew past Soriano for the team lead.
Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a triple (6).
The Cubs play was sloppy as that has been a problem all year. Matt Garza booted a bunt and Geovany Soto also had an error.
Tony Campana stole his 8 base (9 attempts) and made the highlight reel with a diving catch in center.
Chicago Cubs News Tuesday June 28, 2011
Coming to town are the division leading San Francisco Giants for 4 games. An almost unheard of doubleheader on Tuesday. Afternoon and night games planned. Doug Davis in Game 1 and Rodrigo Lopez in Game 2 will go against Barry Zito and Ryan Vogelsong. This will be Barry Zito's first start since coming off the disabled list.
The Cubs are not going to have a day off until the All Star break, July 11-13. This is really going to tax the bullpen especially if the starters don't get through the 6th inning.
